Stewardship Corner: As Wide As a Church Door

In a recent conversation, the Pastor recounted an experience in which a member of the community asked if she was allowed to attend our church.  Of course the answer is: Yes, she is allowed!

In past ages, it was well-known and understood by all that the most wide-open door in a community was that of a church.   It is even referenced in Romeo and Juliet, wherein Mercutio refers to his fatal wound thusly: “No, ’tis not so deep as a well nor so wide as a church-door, but ’tis enough, ’twill serve.”

Sometimes we forget, because we are part of such a long tradition, that others may not know this.

As you leave the parking lot of our church, there is a sign on the left: “You are now entering the mission field.”

We want the people in our community to hear God’s word, to learn Law and Gospel, to feel the comfort of God’s eternal love.   It is our job to make sure people in the community know that our church door IS open, and they are not merely allowed to be here, but wanted.
